Mary Colter Buildings on the Grand Canyon South Rim

From 1902 to 1949, Mary Colter designed a variety of buildings for the Fred Harvey company along the route of the Sante Fe railroad.

Her Grand Canyon buildings are all designed to look as if they grew out of their surroundings, as if they had always been there.

One biography describes her work as seeking to engage and entertain travelers as well as delighting the eye and occupying the mind.
